Pr. Rodolfo Capanna

Specialize in orthopedics and traumatology, biomedical technologies, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation

Professor Rodolfo Capanna, born in 1951 in Rimini, Italy, is a world-renowned authority in orthopedic oncology. He graduated with honors from the University of Bologna’s Faculty of Medicine in 1977 and went on to specialize in orthopedics and traumatology, biomedical technologies, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation, achieving top distinctions in all fields.

He began his career at the prestigious Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute in Bologna, working under Professor Mario Campanacci, a pioneer in the modern classification of bone tumors. In 1993, he was appointed Director of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Division at the Careggi University Hospital in Florence and later became Director of the Tuscany Bone Bank in 1999.

Professor Capanna is internationally recognized for developing the “Capanna Technique,” which combines a structural allograft with a vascularized fibula graft. This innovative approach provides an effective solution for intercalary bone defect reconstruction following tumor resection.

Throughout his career, he has led the School of Specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Pisa and has actively contributed to national and international committees, helping establish guidelines on bone grafts and regenerative medicine. He is the author of over 40 scientific publications and serves on the editorial board of the journal Osteology.

Although retired from his hospital leadership roles, Professor Capanna remains highly active as a consultant and educator, continuing to be a key figure in orthopedic oncology worldwide.
